Thermal Analysis of a Concrete Dam Taking into Account Insolation, Shading, Water Level and Spillover

This study presents a procedure for modeling the heat transfer process in concrete dam, taking into account time-varying boundary conditions on upstream and downstream sides of dam (i.e., water level reservoir, spillover, insolation, shading) which affect temperature dam. The large arch-gravity Moste Dam (in North West Slovenia) was analyzed, where an automated system measurement temperatures, monitoring meteorological effects, installed. Thermal analyses (1D 2D) non-linear non-stationary conduction through solids were performed using finite element method (FEM) based program, TeEx, complemented by two specially developed programs determining effects convection considering also effect shading. A 15-day period as well one year. It found that results fitted with experimentally determined measurements. showed at insolated side gradient largest very narrow area along surface, but did not stabilize shallower than depth about 6 m.
